At a recent workshop, BOG members produced this list of practical steps that BOG as an organisation can take to counter Climate Change.

  • Hold bio-char workshops
  • Support/facilitate tree planting
  • Publicise links to eg timing garden activity according to the seasons and sources of learning
  • Promote schemes which aim to mitigate Climate Change, eg Cheviot Trees
  • Information/education into schools
  • When planning meetings risk assess proposed locations and day of the week and their travel emission implications, leading to eg car sharing, greater use of public transport.
  • Audit travel miles involved in BOG meetings and find ways of reducing this via eg shuttles to and from public transport connections
  • Driving at less than 50 miles an hour
  • Make carbon offset payments to cover the emissions resulting from BOG meetings
  • Lobbying to ban “air miles”
  • Highlight the benefits of organic gardening to reducing climate change, eg carbon capture
  • Assist people in sourcing nutritious food locally
  • Encourage local networking amongst members via e.mail and whatsapp groups to enhance communication, participation and joint local action
  • Organise events on Saturdays when more public transport links are running
  • Sell organic media in which to grow organic potatoes, with education about the benefits
  • Workshops on drying, bottling and preserving food and on apple pressing
  • Assist in members bulk buying garden supplies, tools, equipment, food, etc
  • Workshop on collecting rain water
  • Increased knowledge, skill and information sharing
